In my meetings and appointments over the last several weeks, I have heard more than once reference to commercial brokers who took a referral from a residential agent and did not pay a referral fee or only offered a token gesture of a couple hundred dollars. It has surprised me to learn that some commercial agents wouldn’t treat their colleagues on the residential side of our industry the same way that they would like to be treated.

In any case, our policy at Commercial MasterMinds is that we always pay referral fees to any residential agents referring business that closes a transaction. My personal standard is to pay a 25% referral fee to any residential agent who refers their commercial or investment clients my way. What more could I ask than to receive a genuine lead from a colleague in the industry?

I’m curious to hear what others have to say about their experiences referring business to and from the residential world to the commercial world.
