The World is flattening, July 15 2008
In his book “The World is Flat“, Thomas Friedman explains how the world is a giant playing field being leveled, or made attainable by everyone because of the global reach of the internet. Bennett Voyles, a columnist for National Real Estate magazine, wrote “A Gusher of Arab Investment” where he expounds on the challenges facing Arab investors and the opportunities found outside the USA. The USA is no longer the first choice for wealthy investors from overseas- simply because our economic market is still going down.
With the global reach of the internet, even my CCIM colleagues are working investments for their clients in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, Russia and India. For now, it seems like the smart play, only time will tell when the final internal rate of return calculation is made. Robert White of Real Capital Analytics predicts that foreign investors will return before the New Year. I agree, although I am not sure about the timing. Foreign investors appreciate US assets because of our stability, albeit shaken for the time being. How long will it take to remove uncertainty from our economic climate is anyone’s guess. Risk is manageable, uncertainty is not.
When the time comes to sell the asset that may appeal to foreign investors, remember that Commercial Masterminds markets to all investors and brokers nationally and internationally as needed!

Concerning the book “The world is flat”, I would like to recommend a small, but interesting book, by Aronica and Ramdoo, “The World is Flat? A Critical Analysis of Thomas Friedman’s New York Times Bestseller,” which offers a counterperspective to Friedman’s theory on globalization.
It is a small book compared to the 600 page tome by Friedman, and aimed at the common man and students alike. As popular as the book may be, some reviewers assert that by what it leaves out, Friedman’s book is dangerous. The authors point to the fact that there isn’t a single table or data footnote in Friedman’s entire book.
“Globalization is the greatest reorganization of the world since the Industrial Revolution,” says Aronica. Aronica and Ramdoo conclude by listing over twenty action items that point the way forward, and they provide a comprehensive, yet concise, framework for understanding the critical issues of globalization.
